CD Hidden World Beyond by Jonn Serrie and Gary Stroutsos (2009)

I first heard this CD on Echoes, John Diliberto’s Sunday night music show on WSHU’s NPR radio. Although John Serrie’s CD still has the other-worldly, synthesizer characteristics of his other CDs, what distinguishes this one are the native and ethnic flutes played by Gary Stroutsos and the percussion played by Larry Machlis. His newest album is Thousand Star.

In 2000, space music virtuoso Jonn Serrie and veteran flutist Gary Stroutsos teamed up to synergize their individual musical talents. Serrie brought to the table his lush synthesizer ambience, while the soulful flute playing of Stroutsos provided grounding for the album, resulting in a unique union of earthy and celestial sensibilities. HIDDEN WORLD BEYOND, which features further music from those original sessions, is like buckling yourself in the cockpit and taking another flight through this mesmerizing landscape. Stroutsos's flute acts as a guide of sorts; whether it's the breathy bursts of the shakuhachi or the moody yet melodic Native American flute, it is comforting presence throughout the album. Serrie's synthesizers add an otherworldly, cosmic backdrop while Larry Machlis keeps the pace with his percussion (Music Design).
